Young, Fabulous, and Broke

The first reply I get from people when I tell them I am living in New York is ohhhh that's so expensive.  Sure it can be expensive, as is London, Paris, L.A., and even Minneapolis.  It's all about learning what to do with what you have.  Of course I would love to be shopping at Ethan Allen or Channel but for now I have turned to IKEA and H&M.  (Don't forget IKEA's Tuesday $2.99 Meatball Special!) Living inexpensively doesn't mean you have to give up anything it's just a matter of knowing where and when to do your shopping or go out for entertainment.
The first night I went into a local convenience store on the Upper West Side I about fell over when I saw a box of cereal for $6.00!  It's not that I didn't have the money to spend but rather couldn't justify spending over twice the amount of what I am used to.  After a bit of research and searching I have began to realize where to buy what.  Fresh Fruit and vegetables - from a street vendor or local store.  Anything packaged - Chain stores such as Trader Joe's or if I am brave enough to make the hike to Target in Brooklyn.  Time for money definitely factors in here.  If you have a few hours to venture off for your food then it is great but too often it is more "convenient" to spend the extra money at the local store on your block in order to save yourself the time and added stress.
Robyn and I attend a comedy show at the Comedy Cellar for free by simply requesting passes to their Thursday night show off of their Web site.

  1. Trader Joe's is fairly reasonable in NYC! That's where I used to go. I can't remember where it is though!
